Chris [Nolan] worked out that if we put a little beat after the first set of explosions stops as if something’s gone wrong and the Joker just takes a second to look around surprised like the audience is surprised, and then the major demolition comes in and he jumps straight into the school bus - in that way he was able to come up with a practical scenario in which we could take a principal actor, walk him out of a building that’s about to be destroyed…
We rehearsed with Heath endlessly that morning. We walked him out, got him to do exactly what he was going to do…
Heath was such a perfectionist with what he was doing which was essential because this was obviously a one-take thing.

Butlers at Alfred’s level, (in one version hired away from serving the British royal family by Thomas Wayne) make considerably more than $80,000/year, closer to £100,000 at the low end — plus room, board, and lots of other perks, and he’d have been making longer than little Bruce had been alive.
