I’m going to start using [il] in my blog posts on here and I want to explain what it means.
Simply put it means “Internal Link” and it will be place immediately after a link. This is a message for people using the dashboard within tumblr to let them know that they have to go to my actual blog for the link to work. Clicking within the dashboard will only redirect them to the dashboard.
(Here’s an example: This is my first blog post that I used it in [il]. This is also an example.)
What? Why would you wanna do that?
Well, in the event that I want to change my domain name (which I am considering), I don’t want to update all the internal links manually, especially since it’s easy to post more than 5 items a day. So, if I have to make a reference to an earlier post, what I’m going to do is make an “internal link” to it. Here’s how it works:
My current domain as of this posting is nukirk.com. If I want to make a post within this blog, I have to find that post and then get the URL. Let’s say this is the link (I’m making it simple so you can follow along):
Now, I can make a link and be done. However, if I was to change the name of the blog to thefilesof.nukirk.com, then people will run into a 404 error when they click on one of the old links in the future. I want to “futureproof” this blog as much as possible.
So… to combat this problem, I decided to use the link a little differently:
/really-cool-post/
See? I removed the “http://nukirk.com” part and kept the “/really-cool-post/” part (in actuality, it maybe numbers after the first “/”), so when I changed the name to thefilesof.nukirk.com, then the links would still work on the blog itself, because the blog is looking for the next level UP, NOT the domain name first.
If you are reading this from your dashboard, I have to figure out a way to communicate this idea to you (the tumblrs) without alienating the people who reads the blog (in this case nukirk.com) because if you were to click the link, it’s not going to work.
So, there… if you see [il] and you really want to read what I have to say in an earlier post, go to the actual blog and click on the link. It will always work. It’s a little extra work, but I’m trying to be universal here.
Anywayz, back to the tumblr show.
